The Origin Story of the Specialized Polarized Double-Quad Antenna
The polarized Double-Quad antenna is often mistaken for the conventional Double-Quad antenna, but there are crucial differences. Before diving into the details, let me introduce myself.
My name is Timo Hochhaus. Born on December 22, 1980, in Herne, I trained as an automotive mechatronics technician but now work in hydraulic and pneumatic technology. For over ten years, I have been a passionate RC model builder, a hobby that truly excites me. On September 10, 2014, I co-founded the model-building club Knüppel um dein Leben in Schwelm with friends—a project that continues to thrive today.
My life motto? Impossible is not an option!
The Search for the Perfect FPV Antenna
During my flights, I constantly noticed that none of the available antennas met my expectations. Frequent interference, unreliable reception—simply frustrating! I tried various models, including patch antennas, which worked well in a small area but were not satisfactory overall.
So, I started building my own antennas.
Initially, I followed standard guides for CL antennas and precisely adjusted wire lengths to my frequency. The reception improved, but it was still not the perfect solution. I knew: There had to be a better way!
Developing a Better Solution
Together with fellow FPV pilots, I analyzed the ideal properties an antenna should have. The goal: A large, uniform radiation pattern to ensure stable image transmission and maximum range.
The problem:
-
CL antennas often have a large dead zone and provide only about 1.6 dBic gain.
-
Existing directional antennas had narrow beam angles or were impractical for racing drones.
A friend eventually introduced me to the classic Double-Quad antenna. Initial tests showed promising results—better than the CL antenna, but still not optimal.
So, I started experimenting. I studied various designs, tested countless variations, and optimized angles and wire lengths. After around 50 prototypes, the polarized Double-Quad antenna was born.
The Breakthrough Design
The key difference? The unique angling! Unlike the classic Double-Quad antenna, which remains flat, the polarization changes the wire lengths, resulting in a completely new radiation pattern. This design takes up slightly more space, but the performance improvement is significant.
After six months of development, I finally had an FPV antenna that set new standards in terms of stability, range, and reception quality. Where other antennas show only static, this one delivers a crystal-clear image. With 2.32 dBic gain and an exceptionally large radiation pattern, it is the only antenna of its kind on the market.
Other antennas may offer 3 dBic, but their radiation pattern is often flat, like a frisbee—unsuitable for FPV racing, where antennas rarely stay perfectly upright in flight. This is where the polarized Double-Quad antenna establishes a new benchmark.
Conclusion: This antenna stands out from the competition. It delivers outstanding image stability and range—exactly what I had always been looking for.
Best regards,
Timo Hochhaus
